Footscray is characterised by a very diverse, multicultural central shopping area. This reflects the different waves of immigrants that have moved to the area and influenced the region. This has ranged from the Italian and Yugoslavian migrants earlier while today more influenced by the Vietnamese and more recently the East African immigrants into Melbourne.
